Raceway Park Has More to Offer the Community

June 13, 2008, Toledo, OH - This past Sunday night at Raceway Park was not just “another day at the races”. This night was all about raising money for an organization that helps the Toledo community every day.

Due to the efforts of their staff, and the generosity of their patrons, Raceway Park will be presenting a check to The Victory Center of Toledo in the amount of $2,023 on Friday, June 13th at 10am. This money was raised as part of the Mildred Williams International Driving Series, which held the eighth leg of the thirty-seven race series here in Toledo.

The Victory Center is a non-medical, privately funded, local Toledo cancer wellness center and is the only organization of its kind in the Northwest Ohio area. Laura Bytwerk, director of development for The Victory Center, explains what they provide, “We believe that cancer patients and their families can benefit from non-medical programs and services in addition to their medical treatment. Our sole purpose is to nourish and comfort the body, mind and spirit during the fight against cancer.” Offering such services such as massage therapy, exercise, yoga classes, individual and group support functions all free of charge. They have designed programs to meet the needs of the newly diagnosed as well as those who have lived with cancer for a long time.

This is the second year that Raceway Park has teamed up to benefit The Victory Center as a part of the Mildred Williams International Driving Series, now in its third year. Mildred Williams wasn’t the first female harness driver, but she did battle for the rights of women in the sport. She was the first licensed female by the US Trotting Association in 1968. Mildred has recorded over 400 wins, and is regarded as the most successful female harness driver in U.S. history. Although Mildred passed away just three weeks ago at the age of 92, her spirit and determination will live on wherever this series goes.
